Health and Safety Policy for Finchley Man and Van
Finchley Man and Van is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our moving and removals activities. We recognise that effective health and safety management is an essential part of delivering reliable man and van and removal services.
This policy sets out our approach and responsibilities in managing health and safety in all aspects of our operations, including packing, loading, transportation, unloading and on-site handling of goods.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our core objectives are to prevent injury and ill health, protect property, and reduce risks arising from our work. We aim to:
Identify, assess and control risks associated with moving, lifting, carrying and transporting items. Provide suitable information, instruction, training and supervision for our staff. Maintain vehicles, equipment and work practices to a safe standard. Encourage a positive health and safety culture throughout the company. Continuously improve our safety performance by reviewing incidents, near-misses and feedback.
Legal Responsibilities
Finchley Man and Van will comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry standards that apply to removal, transport and associated services. We will keep our procedures under review as laws, best practice guidance and operational requirements develop, and we will update this policy when necessary.
Management Responsibilities
Company management has overall responsibility for implementing this Health and Safety Policy and ensuring adequate resources are in place. This includes:
Setting clear safety standards and communicating them to all staff. Ensuring suitable and sufficient risk assessments are carried out. Providing appropriate equipment, vehicles and personal protective equipment. Arranging training and refresher training where required. Investigating accidents and incidents to identify causes and improvements. Reviewing this policy periodically to ensure it remains effective and relevant.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees, including drivers, porters and any sub-contracted workers, have an obligation to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Employees must:
Follow all safety procedures, instructions and training provided. Use vehicles, equipment and protective gear correctly and report any defects immediately. Avoid taking unnecessary risks or shortcuts that could compromise safety. Report hazards, near-misses, accidents and injuries as soon as possible. Cooperate fully with risk assessments, investigations and safety improvements.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Finchley Man and Van will carry out risk assessments for common removal tasks and specific jobs where needed. These assessments will consider hazards such as manual handling, slips and trips, working at height when loading, vehicle movements, access issues and the handling of fragile or heavy goods.
From these assessments, we develop and maintain safe systems of work. Staff are required to follow these systems at all times, including guidance on lifting techniques, team lifting for heavy or awkward items, correct use of trolleys and securing loads safely in vehicles.
Manual Handling and Lifting
Manual handling is a key part of removal work and a major focus of our health and safety arrangements. We aim to reduce the risk of injury from lifting and carrying by:
Providing manual handling training, including safe lifting and carrying techniques. Encouraging staff to assess the weight, shape and stability of items before moving them. Using appropriate equipment such as sack trucks, dollies and furniture sliders where practical. Ensuring team lifting is used for heavier or bulkier items. Discouraging lone handling of any load that may cause strain or injury.
Vehicle, Driving and Road Safety
Safe driving and vehicle use are critical to our operations. Finchley Man and Van will:
Ensure that all vehicles used for removal and transport work are regularly inspected, maintained and kept in a roadworthy condition. Require drivers to hold the appropriate valid licence and follow all road traffic laws. Instruct staff to secure loads properly to prevent movement during transit. Promote safe driving behaviours, including compliance with speed limits and avoidance of distraction. Plan routes where possible to reduce unnecessary risks, tight access issues and unsafe parking or unloading locations.
Equipment and Personal Protective Equipment
We will provide suitable equipment to support safe handling and transport of items, and where required, appropriate personal protective equipment such as gloves or safety footwear. Staff must use the equipment and protective gear supplied and report any defects or shortages.
All equipment will be maintained in safe working order. Faulty or damaged equipment must not be used.
Customer and Public Safety
We take reasonable steps to protect customers and members of the public during collection, loading, transport and delivery activities. This includes:
Maintaining clear access routes where practical and keeping work areas tidy. Using caution when moving large items through confined spaces, stairways and common areas. Communicating with customers about any access limitations, potential hazards or special precautions needed on site. Avoiding obstruction of public walkways, entrances or emergency exits wherever reasonably possible.
Training, Information and Supervision
Finchley Man and Van will provide induction and role-specific training for employees, covering relevant safety procedures, manual handling techniques, vehicle safety and emergency actions. Refresher training will be given when working practices change or where further training is identified as necessary.
Supervisors and experienced staff will support and monitor newer team members to help ensure safe working methods are understood and followed.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near-misses and significant hazards must be reported promptly to management. We will record and investigate such events, identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence where reasonably possible.
Emergency procedures will be communicated to staff, including actions to take in case of road traffic incidents, serious injury, fire or other emergencies encountered during removal work.
Monitoring and Policy Review
We will monitor our health and safety performance through incident reports, staff feedback, vehicle and equipment checks and periodic reviews of risk assessments. This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to reflect changes in legislation, operations or best practice.
By working together and following this policy, Finchley Man and Van aims to deliver professional removal and man and van services in a way that protects the health, safety and wellbeing of everyone involved.
